Yelena Taylor is an english-armenian artist traversing the parallel between personal and public abjection. She aims to create taboo works that speak to the intimate alienation of diasporic narratives. Her ritualistic actions conveyed via the sculptural and performed, reveal the connection between bodily disgust and political derision. Handled plainly, high-minded ideologies are boiled down into low-brow symbology, resulting in crude confrontational works, that sometimes shock, sometimes laugh.
She currently utilizes tropes of kink and fetish to capture this dichotomy; enjoying the juxtaposition it provides of baser, domestic bodily function against demarcated contexts of extremified power dynamic – as well as the implied tender intimacy of such acts.
